Presenting in English
Presentations in English play an increasingly important role in teaching and research. In this seminar, we will work together to develop the didactic and rhetorical foundations for a successful presentation in English. We will look at the peculiarities of presenting in English, introduce a limited range of linguistic means and possibilities and, above all, focus on good content preparation. We will show you how to use various tools to improve the structure, linguistic form and delivery of your presentation as a non-native speaker. For example, we will show you how to use Internet applications to listen to your own text and improve your pronunciation. We also put a strong focus on how to plan and deliver your presentation.
This hands-on workshop requires you to prepare a short 5-minute presentation in advance to bring along to the session. It will serve as basis for the exercises during the workshop. The focus lies on the actual wording of the presentation, not the slides. Therefore, we suggest that participants formulate the wording of their presentation beforehand (about 2 pages of text).
Important: This course is primarily aimed at non-native speakers of English, but can also be attended by participants who are native speakers. The primary focus of this course is on presentation techniques, but useful phrases as well as tips and tricks for presentations in English will also be introduced.
