Online course: Introduction to Higher Education

Earn the Certificate in Higher Education of the Bavarian Universities at the Elementary Level in one semester! We will meet in Zoom Sessions and work with the learning management system of the FAU (StudOn). So, this course is a blended learning seminar! All essential basics of Higher Education are taught, from the planning of a course to the examination.

In the course, you will receive a theoretically sound and, at the same time, practice-oriented introduction to Higher Education. You will work in a fixed group within one semester. Due to this, you will acquire a certificate in university teaching. In the process, you will directly apply what you have learned in theory within practical elements such as a collegial observation or an elaborated teaching lecture.

In the learning modules and the (zoom) meetings, you will receive suggestions and impulses that will support you in planning and designing courses. Each face-to-face seminar focuses on a different factor you should consider when planning your teaching.

By the end, you will be able to see the connection between content, learning objectives, methods, media and exams and use this in your planning and design. You will learn approaches to bring students into the focus of the teaching-learning situation. You will apply the underlying principles to one of your courses and design a coherent, didactically justified concept

.

This course is designed as e-learning. So you will learn with screencasts, teaching letters, digital learning modules, and Zoom meetings.

Participation requirements:
Willingness to participate in all Zoom meetings, work independently with online teaching materials, prepare a teaching outline, write reports about your collegial observations, and participate in independent working groups.

Course Structure:

  • Meet the learning facilitator in four meetings via Zoom.
  • Study online courses on various topics (screencasts, teaching letters, learning modules).
  • Organize and take part in small working groups.
  • Individual consultations with the learning facilitator are possible.

Meetings via Zoom:

  • Wednesday, 2023-04-19, 14-17:30
  • Wednesday, 2023-05-17, 14-17:30
  • Wednesday, 2023-06-21, 14-17:30
  • Wednesday, 2023-07-26, 09-16:30 (!)

You have to develop the following portfolio contributions:

  • Outline of a course of 90 minutes (approx. 5-7 pages).
  • Collegial observation with reflection report (approx. two pages) or video recording of a teaching lecture (approx. 20 minutes)
  • Report on the learning process in the  course (approx. 2-3 pages)
  • Various contributions to your working groups and in the Learning Management System.

We expect participants to work continuously on their teaching projects and the learning material. They design such a project, look at which rhetorical elements can support the learning objectives, which assessment methods allow students to look at their learning process, consider which methods of (self-)evaluation can be used, which forms of examination are suitable and how students can be advised in the context of this course.

The Higher Education introductory course is unsuitable for Physicians (Dr. med.).

Your learning facilitator is not a native speaker of the English language. Thereby the course is also unsuitable for native german speakers in general and for german native speakers trying to improve their language skills.
