Digital Didactic Shorties: ‘Did you get it?’ - ‘Yes.’ - New possibilities for formative learning assessments

The ‘Digital Didactic Shorties’ event series offers informative input in short formats. The aim is to provide you as a lecturer with new ideas for (digitally supported) teaching.

Contents

In many conversations, teachers tell us that they repeatedly ask students whether they have understood and confirm that they have. But we are not sure about it. This seminar provides a practical introduction to the didactic background of ‘understanding’ and our teaching planning. We will look at the connection between the teaching activity and the learning process of the students. We clarify what many teachers subsume under ‘understanding’ and how this can be formulated more clearly using Bloom's taxonomy of learning objectives.

You will be introduced to the following alternative suggestions:

  • Analogue methods: Handout questions, voting cards through peer instruction, marble group, red-yellow card; and
  • Digital platforms and methods: peer instruction through mentimeter, queries through Mentimeter.com, and
  • simple questioning techniques that encourage students to verbalise their own thoughts so that they can answer verbally or in writing.

All participants are then able to use at least two methods from the seminar immediately with students in order to avoid questions such as ‘Did you understand’ and thus use more suitable methods for checking learning objectives.

Blended learning materials from the joint project ‘QUADIS’ (Qualität digital gestützter Lehre an bayerischen Hochschulen steigern) are used as optional asynchronous in-depth material.

Transfer support

Teachers at the University of Bayreuth are welcome to hold further discussions with the ZHL in order to discuss teaching design with the concepts, methods and platforms presented in greater depth. Separate work units will be allocated for this purpose.

Speaker

Paul Dölle is a research associate at the Centre for University Teaching (ZHL) at the University of Bayreuth. His expertise in the field of digital teaching innovations, which he has developed since 2014, is reflected in his management of the university didactics seminar programme. He developed the ExamSim project, an AI-based simulator for oral examination situations that enables realistic examination scenarios using a digital avatar. He was also significantly involved in the application process for the QUADIS (funding volume 4.989 million euros) and XRCampus projects.

In his seminars, he teaches the basics of university didactics, modern teaching methods such as flipped classrooms, AI-supported tutoring systems, interactivity in large groups and the creation and optimisation of teaching and learning videos. He attaches particular importance to a goal- and practice-orientated way of working in an interactive and positive atmosphere. Another focus is on the qualification of tutors and e-tutors.
