Designing Meaningful Assignments in the Age of AI

The rise of AI has posed several challenges for course instructors. A key question is how to design tasks and assessments that genuinely promote student learning and cannot easily be completed using tools like ChatGPT.

This workshop aims to equip course instructors with the knowledge and skills necessary to design meaningful tasks and assignments that either incorporate or consider the presence of AI tools. Participants will leave the workshop with a concrete, AI-aware assignment concept tailored to their specific courses and instructional needs.

By participating in this workshop, instructors will learn how to:

  • Understand the capabilities and limitations of current AI tools in academic settings.
  • Design assignments that promote critical thinking, creativity, and deep understanding.
  • Integrate AI tools in a way that enhances learning outcomes rather than diminishes academic integrity.
  • Create assessments that accurately measure student learning in an AI-augmented environment.

Note: Participants should bring a specific task or assignment from their teaching context to work on during the workshop.
