Teaching in English: Methods and Practice for Teaching Excellence
This one-day faculty development seminar on teaching methods and practice is designed for instructors in all disciplinary areas who are interested in teaching and learning excellence. Ask yourself: Do you teach the same way you were taught? Do you think the traditional listen-and-absorb model of knowledge transfer is effective? Or do you attempt to actively engage your students with the material, whether in a class of 30 or 300?
We start from the premise that the role of the teacher is to facilitate student learning. EU guidelines for higher education stress the importance of student-centered learning (SCL) and, with this in mind, we will focus on planning and implementing student-centered learning methodologies in curriculum development and syllabus design.
Participants will get a chance to implement these skills in a microteaching practice session with feedback.
Content:
- classroom dynamics (student-teacher-topic)
- course outcomes and goals
- strategies and methods for student-centered learning
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will have had the opportunity to:
- analyzing course preconditions and classroom dynamics
- establishing and defining course outcomes and goals
- developing student-centered strategies for effective learning
Workshop language is English!
Please bring in a short outline or extract of a course you are teaching or planning to teach to present to the class in the microteaching practice session.
